The Real price of food

It is now common knowledge that the population of this world is huge and we are running out of food. At the moment we talk about genetically modified foods as if we have a choice, we may not have that choice soon. Has anyone thought about this? We flatten land to make way to grow crops for bio fuels, what about land for crops to eat?
If we are heading for a food shortage why are the supermarkets continuously doing BOGOF offers. People with no knowledege of what is going on around them taking the offer and then chucking that other mouldy tub of margarine out for landfill.
Everyone needs to be educated more and they need to be told exactly what that cheap special offer is really costing them.
